Over the past few months, two well-known Christian leaders announced publicly they had abandoned their faith. One was an American pastor, Joshua Harris, who wrote a very popular book about Christian dating called “I Kissed Dating Good-bye”. The other is an Australian singer and worship leader by the name of Marty Sampson. He is the author of some of the most iconic worship songs. They are no longer Christians because they are filled with doubt, one of the devil’s dangerous weapon.
The first sin was essentially due to doubt. God told Adam and Eve not to eat the fruit, then the serpent came and told Eve something else. Eve doubted what God told her, and she committed the sin. Another example of doubt in the Bible is the story of Abraham and Sarah. God had promised them a child. As Sarah became very old, doubt overcame her, thinking she would never have a child, and told Abraham to go sleep with the maid. We know the devil attacked Christians in all kinds of ways (lust, money, false promises, etc.), but doubt seems to be one of his most effective technique.
Joshua Harris who wrote the book on dating basically gave guidelines that Christians are supposed to follow when making that big decision on their life. A lot of couples followed to the T what he said. There has been a recent development in the story: Mr. Joshua is in the process of divorcing his wife. Now, will his followers have doubt about their relationships? They do not have to if they know in the first place why they got married. And this is one of the solutions when having doubt: be confident that God will guide us during the journey. In addition of praying to God asking him to make our faith stronger, we have to think about why we became a Christian. Is your faith based on solid ground? Did you come with bad intentions? Were you trying to impress someone? Or did you do it because God had saved you? One common way marriage counselors help couples is by reminding them of the moment they decided to tie the knot, bringing them back to those happy memories. If they truly loved each other, things will work out.
We must pray for people who are having doubt, especially those two guys, Joshua Harris and Marty Sampson, since they were very influential in the Christian community, so that God can show them the way.
